Faith , Mercy & Calvin - Arrived - April 27, 2008
Mother and grandmother died of AIDS. These two women ran a illegal brewery and practiced prostitution in the one room hut where they are from. They were primarily cared for by their mentally ill grand father, Who loves the Lord with all of his heart. He reportedly cared for both of these women in the last year of their life. The situation was very desperate for the children with two abusive aunts nearby, one of whom tried to poison them and the grandfather. They often came to taunt them saying go and dig up your dead mother. The children felt very unsafe. They were dressed in rags and were often reported to smell of urine and were extremely dirty. They all had very bad cases of worms in their stomachs and ring worm on their heads. Faith, Mercy, and Calvin were wild and undisciplined. Now Faith is helpful, fun loving, and serves as interpreter. Mercy is delicate, happy, and enjoys being part of a family. Calvin is sweet, energetic and a bit of a comedian.
Mercy & Elkanah
Arrived - August 5, 2008
Mercy and Elkanahs mother died of HIV. They lived with a mentally ill aunt, who has five children of her own. She is extremely poor scraping by with very little. These children never had a home or a pair of shoes. The skin on the soles of their feet were so thick and full of cuts. They all lived in a one room hut with a dirt floor and with no blankets or beds. Mercy and Elkannah were frightened, malnourished, and knew nothing about being part of a family. Mercy is helpful, sweet, and stubborn. Elkanah is the hardest working and has a great desire to be loved and accepted.
Judith, Daisy & Sharon
Arrived - August 12, 2008
Were found in a one room hut that housed over 16 children. They witnessed their mother and father and infant sibling being murdered leaving them to an aunt who was taking care of 9 other orphaned children. These children were so hungry that they were begging for food. Judith was so thin because she was giving her portion to her younger sisters. Judith was emaciated, very shy and soft spoken. Now is responsible, energetic, and loves school. Daisy and Sharon were quiet and leery of strangers. Now they are friendly, helpful and happy.
Dennis & Mercy
Arrived August 21, 2008
Dennis and Mercy were being cared for by an elderly alcoholic grandmother. Their bodies were consumed by worms. Mercy has the body of a one year old and is almost three. There was no water and little food where they lived. Baby Mercy’s mouth and eyes were covered with fly's and she was screaming with thirst. Dennis and Mercy were ill, confused and very unfamiliar with family life. Now Dennis is helpful, intelligent, and loves to be loved. Baby Mercy is silly, happy, and attached to the family. She loves to sing.
Emmanuel called Manny - Arrived - March 15, 2009
Our second to youngest addition to the family. He has survived a great deal. He was found in a local hut , He was in the dirt underneath a pile of dirty laundry. He was bearly able to cry with a severe septic inflection of the blood and eye infection and needed hospitalization. His mother is mentally ill and out of touch with reality. Emmanuel is now a healthy thriving 14 month old baby boy!
Georgia & Memoi-
Arrived at night - September 3, 2008
They were very extremely neglected and are still learning to interact with people. They were by far the filthiest of all the children being soaked with urine and feces. Their mother suffers from alcoholism and spends much of her time in prison. Memoi was left in a closet like room most of the time and suffering from an undiagnosed broken leg. Georgia at age 2 1/2 was begging on the street for Mandazi and Chocolate. Georgia at first was defensive and constantly hitting and biting. Now is learning to be around others. She is the most improved this month and has been singing when no one is looking. Memoi was very withdrawn and preferred to be alone but now is interacting with others better and smiling.
Daisy & Emmanuel
Arrived - October 29, 2008
Found them a month after their mother died of depression and the father died of Malaria. They have no relatives so neighbors were caring for them in a hut where there were animal droppings where they slept. They were living in the same vicinity as a severely mentally deranged neighbor. Daisy Memoi and Emmanuel appeared to be in shock, had trouble making eye contact and were very afraid of the mazungu, white man. Now they are happy, settled and freely affectionate.
Abigail
Arrived - December 1, 2008
Born to a 13 year old girl who was convinced not to have an abortion. The mothers parents were so dysfunctional if she gave the Abigail to them they would let her die. The young age of the girl made it impossible for her to adequately care for the baby. Abigail had a very high fever for the first 2 days, and had trouble swallowing which made it extra diffiult for her to thrive but now is one year old and growing steadily and interacting on schedule. Abigail is fun and intelligent and loves to sing.
